Perthshire, situated in the centre of Scotland, is one of the country’s most revered counties. Known as the ‘Big County’, it provides a Scottish experience that you’ll never forget, regardless of what your interests are. There’s so much to see and do that you’ll find it difficult to fit even a small percentage of it in within one trip.
Due to Perthshire’s location, it provides a fantastic base for a visit to almost every part of Scotland. Here we take a look at three highlights of the county itself, giving you an insight into exactly what you can do when you’re there without even leaving the area.
1. Birnam Wood / Dunsinane Hill

If you’re a William Shakespeare fan, head towards the east of the county for a visit to two locations made famous by Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
Whilst both have somewhat of a fantastically mythical and eerie feel about them in one sense, take away the darkness of Macbeth and you’ll be able to experience two wonderful parts of Scotland, so much so that one of them, Birnam Wood, attracted the famed writer Beatrix Potter from her London home on many occasions.
2. Perth

For a completely different feel to Birnam Wood and Dunsinane Hill, take a trip into the city of Perth for a fantastic experience, whether you’re looking to dine, shop or simply relax.
Although the fifth biggest city in Scotland – and once seen as the capital city – Perth is often completely overshadowed by its larger counterparts, but the truth is it has just as much to offer in every respect.
From the wonderful Scone Abbey, rightful home to the Stone of Destiny (though the stone is now in Edinburgh Castle), which was historically used during the coronation of monarchs within the country, to Tay Street, a fantastically beautiful part of the city offering the best in both retail and culinary therapy, you’ll never have to stray far to come across whatever it is that interests you when visiting Perth.
3. Schiehallion

Although not one of the country’s largest mountains, Schiehallion is arguably one of the most visited, for the simple fact that it is stunningly beautiful, whether you’re at the bottom or the top, viewing it from afar or within touching distance.
A particularly popular walking location for years, standing at over 3,500 feet high, Schiehallion may not be a possibility for everyone, but with even a short walk up the mountain you’ll be able to sample fantastic views of the surrounding area and some of the country’s most beautiful wildlife – and if the walk didn’t, both of these will no doubt leave you breathless!
Mention Perthshire to people and chances are they’ll instantly think of the Australian city of Perth. As fantastic as this part of the world may be, there really isn’t any need to travel several thousands of miles to see natural beauty, historical sites or wonderful cities – simply head to Scotland and you can sample it all.
