3 Highlights Of Perthshire, Scotland’s Big County

Perthshire, situated in the centre of Scotland, is one of the country’s most revered counties.  Known as the ‘Big County’, it provides a Scottish experience that you’ll never forget, regardless of what your interests are. There’s so much to see and do that you’ll find it difficult to fit even a small percentage of it in within one trip.

Due to Perthshire’s location, it provides a fantastic base for a visit to almost every part of Scotland. Here we take a look at three highlights of the county itself, giving you an insight into exactly what you can do when you’re there without even leaving the area.

1.  Birnam Wood / Dunsinane Hill

If you’re a William Shakespeare fan, head towards the east of the county for a visit to two locations made famous by Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.

Whilst both have somewhat of a fantastically mythical and eerie feel about them in one sense, take away the darkness of Macbeth and you’ll be able to experience two wonderful parts of Scotland, so much so that one of them, Birnam Wood, attracted the famed writer Beatrix Potter from her London home on many occasions.

2.  Perth

Image: Juan Segal/Flickr

For a completely different feel to Birnam Wood and Dunsinane Hill, take a trip into the city of Perth for a fantastic experience, whether you’re looking to dine, shop or simply relax.

Although the fifth biggest city in Scotland – and once seen as the capital city – Perth is often completely overshadowed by its larger counterparts, but the truth is it has just as much to offer in every respect.

From the wonderful Scone Abbey, rightful home to the Stone of Destiny (though the stone is now in Edinburgh Castle), which was historically used during the coronation of monarchs within the country, to Tay Street, a fantastically beautiful part of the city offering the best in both retail and culinary therapy, you’ll never have to stray far to come across whatever it is that interests you when visiting Perth.

3.  Schiehallion

Image: Stuart Anthony/Flickr

Although not one of the country’s largest mountains, Schiehallion is arguably one of the most visited, for the simple fact that it is stunningly beautiful, whether you’re at the bottom or the top, viewing it from afar or within touching distance.

A particularly popular walking location for years, standing at over 3,500 feet high, Schiehallion may not be a possibility for everyone, but with even a short walk up the mountain you’ll be able to sample fantastic views of the surrounding area and some of the country’s most beautiful wildlife – and if the walk didn’t, both of these will no doubt leave you breathless!

Mention Perthshire to people and chances are they’ll instantly think of the Australian city of Perth.  As fantastic as this part of the world may be, there really isn’t any need to travel several thousands of miles to see natural beauty, historical sites or wonderful cities – simply head to Scotland and you can sample it all.

Top Tips For A Safe And Healthy Holiday In Egypt

In the last 15 years, Egypt has become one of the most popular package holiday destinations, but Egypt is still a developing country – staying healthy and safe while on holiday is possible if you follow a few tips.

Stomach problems in Egypt

bacteria bugs in EgyptEgypt is known for holiday stomach upsets because of the water, the heat – and because it is sometimes hard to keep hands clean to prevent cross-infection from bugs like Salmonella, E.Coli, Dysentery – or the parasitic infection Cryptosporidium, which is found in contaminated swimming pool water.

  • Don’t eat undercooked meat, fish or eggs, unpasteurised milk or cheese or foods on a buffet which have been reheated or are not chilled
  • Only drink bottled water – even more important on cruise boats, where salads, vegetables and fruit may have been washed in Nile water
  • Shower before and after using the swimming pool – Cryptosporidium is passed in faeces, so never allow children to enter pools if they are wearing dirty nappies
  • Wash and clean hands and surfaces with antibacterial hand wipes or gel – you can even wipe cutlery and the rims of glasses and cups. Stomach bugs in Egypt are often passed through handling money, so wash hands every time you handle the currency.

Sun safety in Egypt

The sun in Egypt is fierce – even out of season, when the temperature may feel cool. Use a high factor (50-60) suncream and stay out of direct sunlight – wear a hat and lightweight shirt to prevent burning. Also drink at least one-and-a-half litres of bottled water every day to keep hydrated. At night it can be cold in Egypt – if you get burned in the day, wrap up warmly at night to prevent getting a chill, and always take a cardigan and jacket for chillier evenings in Egypt, whatever the season. The sun can also cause prickly heat rash – take some calamine cream with you, just in case.

Holiday accidents in Egypt

Egypt is now a centre for many different sports and holiday activities and it is important to make sure that you are given the correct safety equipment – eg protective headgear – as well as tuition if needed. Also check the insurance policy of the company offering the sport or recreation – and make sure your own holiday insurance is adequate to cover you for the activity, including watersports, horse riding, quad bikes or jeeps and hot air balloons. There have recently been shark attacks in Red Sea resorts, so do not ignore any warnings to stay out of the water.

Vaccinations for Egypt

The following vaccinations are recommended for Egypt:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Polio (booster needed every 10 years)
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow Fever (if travelling to Egypt from an infected area)

The following are sometimes recommended

  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis B
  • Rabies
  • TB

Most vaccinations need to be given at least 10 days before travelling – others like rabies or diphtheria, two to three months beforehand, so see your GP as soon as you book your holiday.

Security in Egypt

Egypt has recently been in the news for its political situation – and in previous years holiday resorts have also been subject to terrorist attacks. The Egyptian police are extremely diligent and security in hotels and at tourist sites is usually tight. However don’t wander off by yourself into remote areas or non-tourist areas in your resort. The Foreign Office website carries up-to-date news on any current or specific security threats.

Avoid Salmonella on holiday – here’s how

Salmonella is one souvenir you don’t want to bring back from holiday, but even a simple lapse in hygiene or food preparation at your hotel can end up in disaster if you contract Salmonella food poisoning on your holiday.

Salmonella symptoms can take hold from 12 to 72 hours after infection and the effects of a salmonellosis can be severe, including:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Sickness and diarrhoea
  • Stomach Cramps
  • Watery stools

Severe or prolonged salmonella symptoms can lead to dehydration, which may require rehydration therapy in hospital, so it is vital to seek medical help if the symptoms are severe and do not get better after 24 hours.

Usually it takes around seven days to feel better – but salmonella symptoms can disappear for a few weeks, only to return, so you may need further treatment when you return home to clear the infection.

If you have suffered from Holiday Sickness in Egypt, you can make a claim against the UK tour operator as soon as you arrive home to the UK. If you have evidence to prove the illness was a result of the negligence of the hotel staff, then you have every chance of making a successful Holiday Sickness Claim.

Road Tripping in Canada

Let’s face it, Canada is massive. Like the United States, China, Brazil, Australia, Russia…well, any country that lets you cross over many time zones, Canada has a universe of places to see and things to do. There are things to keep in mind that will make your Canadian road trip more pleasant and enjoyable. These things are as simple as taking a tire iron and a spare with you if you plan to road trip across the desert in Alberta – or thermal underwear in Alaska.

The first and most important thing to do on a Canadian road trip is leave your attitude behind. Canadians are reknowned for their courtesty and easy going way of life so start out your trip relaxed and keep it going the whole way. Next, make sure you have all of your required travelling papers and passports handy. You never know when you will be asked for them.

Tipping is normally required at restaurants, bars and other service locations. This extends to things like taxis and other service based industries. A lot of shops, bakeries and the like will have a little tip jar, but tipping here is non-essential.

If you are going through Quebec, or some other French-speaking pocket, a translation book or device will always come in handy. You can definitely get around without it, since nowadays most people speak English, but making the effort will always be greatly appreciated.

Do not fail to bring camping gear. Most of the populated areas of Canada lie within 150 miles (that’s 240 kilometers) from the United States border. If you plan on seeing the “coutryside” you will have many opportunities to pull over and spend a night or two. Canada welcomes casually oriented travellers and it provides many locations, in the most unlikely spots, to just “take it all in”.

Do change your currency before you begin your road trip. Canadian currency is gaining strength on the world market and is going through radical physical changes. Did you know Canada now is experimenting with plastic bills? Don’t expect to always find your idea of fair exchanges everywhere you go. It is even better still to carry a credit card that is readily accepted in the majority of Canadian locations.

Do not be rude on the road. Observe the law and be courteous to other drivers. If you need help with technical conversions settle that ahead of time. Do not hog the road. Canada is very lax on recreational alcohol and drug use, but if you break the law, there are harsh penalties for it. Canada is very much a live-and-let-live society, but they do not tolerate idiocy and irresponsibility.

Do make time to go out of your way to see anything that is labelled as a “scenic wonder”. Canada is largely undeveloped and raw. Natural beauty abounds and there are thousands of locations that can make the trip of a lifetime. Canada is romantic, spacious, alluring and most of all…fun!

Road-tripping in Canada is a real world class opportunity. If you happen to go from one ocean to the other you will likely see things that few people will ever experience. Just take your time, act friendly and be responsible.
