Nothing facilitates the cliché ‘more money than sense’ than spending what is considered by most as a very comfortable yearly income on a place to sleep for a night. While the majority of us are content to spend a modest amount on a reasonably priced hotel when we go away, there are a few who see staying in a hotel as a chance for an ostentatious display of wealth – and there are plenty of hotels in the world that are happy to oblige.
The Hugh Hefner Sky Villa Palms Resort
Hugh Hefner has a reputation himself for being rather over the top, and this suite demonstrates that. Based in Las Vegas with an average price of $35,487 per night, it might seem overly expensive, but you certainly get more than the average hotel amenities for your money.
Spread out over two storeys, it features two and a half bathrooms, including an over-sized Jacuzzi and a glass shower with floor to ceiling windows. Your very own poker table and two bars provide entertainment, as does a private media room, and there is a full gym and massage room. For more private entertainment, the master bedroom has an eight foot rotating bed and mirrors on the ceiling, for the true Playboy experience. Yet it is not the most expensive in the world…
Hotel Martinez
Next up is the Penthouse Suite at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes. For the bargain price of just $37,500/night, this deluxe apartment has four bedrooms, multiple living and dining areas, marble baths and a spa on the terrace which offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean. For those on a slightly tighter budget, it can be divided into four smaller suites at certain times of the year, although the film festival should be avoided if you are looking to save any pennies.

Four Seasons
The Ty Warner Penthouse at the Four Seasons in New York is named for the hotel’s owner. It covers 43,000 square feet and costs around $42,000 per night. The lacquered walls are inlaid with mother of pearl, and the Thai silk canopy in the master bedroom is made with 22-carat gold threads. There is also a floor to ceiling indoor waterfall in the Zen room, and a grand piano in the private library.

Raj Palace Hotel
The Raj Palace Hotel in Jaipur is home to the famous Presidential Suite. The former home of a maharaja, this palatial series of rooms costs $45,000 a night to make your own. It is spread over four floors and has a private entrance. The furniture is mostly made of gold, silver and ivory, and a private pool, a private kitchen and a two storey reception room are just some of the delights it has to offer.
Hotel President Wilson
The crowning jewel, however, is the Royal Penthouse Suite, Hotel President Wilson, Geneva. At a whopping $65,000/night, this bullet-proof(!) suite has a Steinway grand piano, library, billiard room and much more. Even the amazing hotel headboards cost more than most people earn in a week. Check it out, if you can!
