World’s Coldest Travel Tours

If your blood runs hot and you prefer cooler worldwide destinations, we’ve got just the thing; travel tours that make the most of their frigid conditions. From the North to South Pole, travellers are hanging up their high heels for ice boots and trekking into the cold unknown. These aren’t your average London travel tours and certainly are not for the faint of heart.

Different Temperature Travel Tours

Lake Placid, New York offers much in the vein of extreme sports at extreme temperatures. Being within driving distance of the Big Apple; Lake Placid is most famous for its involvement with the establishing of the Winter Olympic Games and will play host to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Travel tour agencies might warn against using the Olympic facilities, but high octane action combined with hotel conditions of absolute luxury, comfort and danger share a fascinating duality in Lake Placid. However you can minimise the danger and maximise the fun with professional bobsled drivers offering trips down the same track Olympic legends have claimed the gold. As far as holiday and travel tours go, Lake Placid is anything but placid; be prepared for action.

If exotic only brings up images of steamy jungles and tropical beaches then consider a travel tour guide exploring the Antarctic Peninsula. As a definition of exotic, few travel this way for fear of the temperatures however the wildlife and imagery that one can experience from the region are breathtaking; in some cases literally. Departing from the world’s southern most city, Ushuaia in Argentina, travel tours expose the freezing underbelly of the world although on average the temperature is surprisingly bearable at 20°F. Penguins, walrus, polar bears and seal pups are all on arctic safari; penguin chicks are so cute you might be tempted to keep one as a pet! Naturalist led travel tours offer kayaking around icebergs, ice field hikes and shore treks amongst thousands of cute penguins; just be sure to layer your clothes with an outer shell of windproof and waterproof clothing.

Feel like a Sled?

Finally if you prefer a laid back approach to adrenaline pumping activity, sledding in Preda-Bergün is a Swiss adventure that is safe, cold and active. At 6 kilometres long, the Preda-Bergün cross-country toboggan course is a relative self serve travel tour of the country-side’s picturesque farmlands and forests. This European travel tour finds its start at 5,900 feet in Preda to the finish at 4,484 feet in Bergün. Be sure to wear protective gear and look out for fellow toboggan enthusiasts parked off at sharp hairpins for safety; periodic darkness is also a concern but adds to the sense of adventure. With free unlimited train trips back to the start of the course, it’s an opportunity to truly experience the countryside without fear of missing anything. The glaciated Alpine peaks offer gorgeous sights with an intense active adventure.

These cold temperature travel tours may not suit everyone, but if you’re willing to sacrifice a little comfort for extreme adventure then you won’t regret taking on one of these truly lesser travelled journeys.

Sarah Mancini is a bit of an adrenaline junkie when it comes to travel. Not content to visit a tropical island or fancy hotel, Sarah pushes the boundaries of what is considered an exotic vacation and often travels from her luxury property for rent in London. All around the world, she may seem a bit of a jet setter but always aims to end her days by purchasing a luxury property for sale in Florence and settling in Tuscany.

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew Bangkok

The Wat Phra Kaew is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple (wat) in Thailand. It is a “potent religio-political symbol and the palladium of Thai society”. It is located in the historic centre of Bangkok (district Phra Nakhon), within the precincts of the Grand Palace.

The main building is the central ubosoth, which houses the statue of Emerald Buddha. The legendary history of this Buddha image is traced to India, five centuries after the Lord Buddha attained Nirvana, till it was finally enshrined in Bangkok at the Wat Phra Kaew temple in 1782 during Rama I’s reign (1782–1809). This marked the beginning and raise of the Chakri Dynasty of the present Kingdom of Thailand (the present head of the dynasty is King Rama IX.[1] The Emerald Buddha, a dark green statue, is in a standing form, about 66 centimetres (26 in) tall, carved from a single jade stone (Emerald in Thai means deep green colour and not the specific stone). It is carved in the meditating posture in the style of the Lanna school of the northern Thailand. Except for the Thai King, no other person is allowed to touch the statue. The King changes the cloak around the statue three times a year, corresponding to the summer, winter, and rainy seasons, an important ritual performed to usher good fortune to the country during each season.

While legend traces this statue to India, its rich historical records dates its finding in Cambodia in the 15th century, moved to Laos in the 16th century and then to Vientiane where it remained for 215 years, and finally to Thailand in the 18th century. Considering the long history and Nagasena’s (a Brahmin who became a Buddhist sage and lived about 150 BC) prophesy that the Emerald Buddha would bring “prosperity and pre-eminence to each country in which it resides”, the Emerald Buddha deified in the Wat Phra Kaew is deeply revered and venerated in Thailand as the protector of the country.

Wine enthusiasts who have already toured Napa and Sonoma valleys in northern California, uncorked bottles in the Champagne region of France, and tasted wine in Tuscany, may want to head to Mendoza in Argentina for a unique tasting adventure in the Andes. Mendoza, like many wine producing regions, is startlingly beautiful.  The area is dry and sunny, full of lakes and rivers, and blessed with the snow capped Andes as a backdrop.

The high altitude and extreme variance in temperature produce some of the best wines in the Americas. This area of the world is often compared to Napa Valley around thirty years ago and viticulturists have embraced Mendoza with the belief that the combination of world class wines and stunning scenery will thrust this area into the international spotlight. There are many wineries or bodegas located in and around the city of Mendoza which makes for full days of wine tasting.  Travelers can horseback ride, bike, or bus to the tasting rooms, where tours, explanations, and delicious cuisine await. It is also possible to hire an oenologist to accompany you for a more personalized experience.  Many of the wineries have their own bed and breakfasts, or unique winery accommodations for guests.

A great place to begin a tasting tour is at the Vines of Mendoza tasting room, which is centrally located and offers all the best wines of the region. Once you have tasted the different wines you can visit the wineries that produce your favorites.  Two top-notch places are Tapiz and Achaval Ferrer which offer great wine flights and interesting, informative tours.

Mendoza is a bustling and beautiful city with 150,000 inhabitants and offers a variety of activities to suit every taste. In addition to wine tasting, travelers can take cooking classes with world class chefs, climb the Andes, hike through spectacular pastoral landscapes, try white-water rafting, and enjoy evening tango shows.

Another perk to visiting Argentina, is that the dollar and euro stretches a little further here than it does in Europe or the United States. Travelers can very easily fly to one of Argentina´s other great travel destinations or head to Chile after their wine tasting tour.

Adventure Awaits in Colorado

Rafting on the Arkansas River, Colorado, USA

White-water rafting and kayaking: They define Colorado adventure vacation, help forge friendships and, right now, are roaring into action. Thanks to this winter’s snow, Colorado’s 13 river systems are in tiptop shape for the state’s white-water season.

The rivers change in shape and feel each year because of the melted snow, or run-off. So water-lovers keep coming back each season for more surprises. From families seeking mellow float trips to experienced, death-defying thrill-seekers, people from all walks of life flex their paddle power on Colorado’s rivers.

River experts say rafters and kayakers will be able to enjoy sustained flows throughout the entire 2005 season on the Cache la Poudre, Arkansas, Animas, Yampa, Green and Colorado rivers.

Flows are expected to be at their best across the state from mid-May to the end of June. Early season, in April, is the perfect time to catch the wildest white-water and beat the crowds, however. It also is the best time to catch the early-season deals. Toward the end of the season in July and August, meanwhile, is when smoother waters prevail — making it perfect for float trips.

To experience a white-water adventure in Colorado, trek to the high country for an overnight trip, or take a day trip as part of a camping adventure to the mountains. Alternatively, gather a troop of weekend warriors and cash in on group discounts offered by most outfitters throughout the season.

Once there, get ready for the ride of your life. Colorado river guides know the rapids like the back of their hands, but they’ll also make you laugh, cook for you and educate you on some of the flora and fauna indigenous to the area. Most river outfitters provide all of the gear you’ll need. They are professional leaders and safety experts as well, so even if you are not a pro on the rapids, you can rest assured that someone is watching your back.
